Overton GATHERING 12/3/2011 Apparently there were people buried at Overton from the early 1820's up until the mid 1870's, which would make for a rather large cemetery, most of which is non-existent now. The original parish seat for Claiborne parish was the Overton Community. A saw mill and grist mill was established at the junction of Cooley Creek and Bayou Dorcheat. Over the next few years commercial traffic and Overton grew. The economic life of Minden centered around commerce on Bayou Dorcheat. Three separate landings on the bayou served the Minden community, and the city served as a shipping point for goods from much of the interior of North Louisiana. Before the War Between the States, warehouses and commercial buildings extended from more than a mile along the East bank of Bayou Dorcheat. In 1848 after being hit by two Yellow Fever epidemics, Overton lost the title as Claiborne Parish seat to the town of Athens.

Dr. John Andrew Jackson INABNETT b. Charleston, SC in 1834 and his wife Georgia Missouri (Remer) Inabnett b. Abt. 1839 in New Orleans, LA. Married September 1859 in Bossier Parish, LA. Lived in Bellevue, LA until late 1869 or early 1870. Family is found in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Dr. John Andrew Jackson Inabnett received his doctor's degree from Louisiana State University in 1875. This family bought land in Garland City, Miller Co., AR in 1885. I know they had a daughter, Georgia M. Inabnett who was born in 1868 and died in 1886. She is buried in Wilson Cemetery (on private property) somewhere between Garland City and Genoa, AR. The family probably moved about the time they bought the property in Garland City, AR. We do not know when the wife, Georgia Missouri (Remer) Inabnett died but Dr. John Inabnett is listed as a physician and a widower in the 1900 Census for Miller County. Broken tombstone of Lucien Bonner: daughter of J.L. Bonner and Sarah Reed Bonner and Granddaughter of Jane Hays Drew Reed. It is really shocking to see the tombstones broken up so badly, this done by dozers when I-20 was built. In present time, this would never happen I am told. Work stops when a cemetery is found and either the bodies are moved to another cemetery (at contractor's expense) or the road moves.

Dr. Samuel Mays Grigsby was an in law of Dr. Glass
Born in South Carolina
This is tombstone in a small cemetery maintained by R.O. Machen and supported by family members. Dr. Samuel Mays Grigsby is GGG Grandfather to Harmon, Caldwell, Tom, Richard, Beth, and Katie. Flat Lick Cemetery is 17 miles north of Minden on Line Road just barely in Claiborne Parish. Dr. Grigsby and his wife Sarah Sally Green are buried in that cemetery, side by side. He/she are also the GG Grandparents of our cousin and high school classmate, Charles "Red-Eye" Grigsby and his deceased brother, Jerry. Charles is a Minister in Tennessee, close to Memphis. The son of the GGG Grandparents was Lemuel Grigsby and he is the common ancestor to Reverend Charles Grigsby and us. Lemuel had a son, also Dr. Samuel Mays Grigsby, 1860-1892. He was my Grandmother Drew's Father. Thanks to R.O. Machen and his son for taking care of this cemetery where his ancestors and ours are buried.
