Elizabeth Baucum Joyce

Sherry, Elizabeth Joyce was Marilynn Watkin's (class 54) daughter. Her husband is the famous author of children's books,

Bill Joyce. She apparently had a lot of true grit, as I was told a story about her taking the Shreveport City Council to court to allow her to have chickens in her yard!

SS Submitted by Carolyn Sale McDaniel class 1954.

Elizabeth Baucum Joyce

Shreveport, LA - Elizabeth Baucum Joyce died Wednesday afternoon, after giving ALS as much hell as she could muster. A former debutante, Elizabeth could out drink or cuss any fella and do it with class. She was a brilliant attorney who wearied of corporate law, so she quit one day and by the next day she had a job as a restaurant maître d'. To a bewildered client who came to dine she said with off- handed aplomb, "Last week I was your attorney. Today I'm recommending the red snapper with capers. But not the sweet breads. They're a little salty." And so was she.

Elizabeth was a Valkyrie. She's what Royals should be. Loving, gracious, kind and courageous when it comes to those who need protecting. She was a movie star who never got around to making a movie because she was too busy making life into her movie. She focused much of her considerable energy on the "Lighthouse kids" a group of young people whom she guided and helped from childhood to adulthood. She loved the Volunteers of America and the Lighthouse Program, and her devotion to these kids is legendary.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Katherine Joyce. She is survived by her husband William Edward Joyce and son, Jackson Edward Joyce as well as family members, brother, Dr. Ralph Willard Baucum, III, and wife, Mary Patrick.
